Took a 40 min drive to Beelitzer Heilstätten to check out Baum & Zeit, World War II ruins of an Alpine house. In around 1900, the working population of the imperial capital of Berlin was supposed to recover from the then rampant tuberculosis at a sanatorium surrounded by the finest architecture and extensive forests there. In 1945 the last battle of WWII rooted in the forest of Beelitz during which the 12th army tried to cut through the Soviet troops’ stranglehold in Berlin. At that time the Beelitzer Heilstätten was converted into a battlefield hospital overcrowded with 3000 wounded soldiers. It wasn’t until April 1945 that the Red Army succeeded in taking the Heilstätten. #berlin #expatlife #architecture #ruins #forest #sanatorium #weekendgetaway #ausflug #excursion #history #wanderlust #trees #recommended #raveabouttravel
